Why 1291?
According to tradition, it was in early August 1291 that the representatives of Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden concluded the Federal Pact, an alliance considered the founding act of the Swiss Confederation. It is in memory of this pact that the National Day is celebrated every August 1st.
